CARIBBEAN FRONT ROOM EXHIBITION

A Tribute to the Windrush Generation

Take a seat in this authentic 1960s-70s Caribbean front room and step into a space rich with culture, heritage and memories. Through immersive digital technology, members of the Windrush Generation and descendants share personal stories of the front room and the treasured objects within it, bringing everyday household items to life through lived experience and storytelling.

Curated by the John family, whose roots are in Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, the room is filled with familiar items found in many Caribbean homes of the time, from hand-crocheted doilies and embroidered cushions to a glass display cabinet showcasing treasured keepsakes.

Blending nostalgia with storytelling, this immersive installation invites visitors to do more than observe history, it invites them to experience it.

The front room was a space reserved for formal entertaining, kept immaculate; where everything had its place, and always ready to welcome visitors. It was where music by artists such as Jimmy Cliff and Eric Donaldson played on the Blue Spot gram, where families gathered to share stories, laughter and wisdom, and where many Black-led churches first met before establishing permanent places of worship.

Every object tells a story of community, legacy and the lasting contribution of the Windrush Generation to British society.

Step inside, take a seat and discover the stories that turned a house into a home and a front room into the heart of a community.
