Windrush Day 2026 Celebration

Pymmes Park comes alive with Caribbean food, music and storytelling as Windrush history is celebrated through the unveiling of a talking bench and QR code-linked benches, a digitally linked immersive Caribbean Front Room exhibition, a Windrush-inspired children’s book and a commemorative tree planting ceremony.
The Windrush Day celebration also features a live band, cultural performances and opportunities for attendees to share their own Windrush stories and reflections as part of this intergenerational community celebration.

Talking Bench

The talking park bench, made from solid oak for outdoor durability, features audio excerpts from renowned actor Rudolph Walker CBE’s autobiography Walking with Dignity, alongside stories from Enfield’s Windrush generation.
The experience is also accessible through three QR code-linked benches featuring films, photographs, and audio. Visitors can sit, listen and reflect on captured memories of challenge, resilience, culture and achievement.
Front Room Exhibition

This touring immersive exhibition will form part of a programme of unveiling for the Windrush Day celebration at Pymmes Park on Monday, 22 June 2026. The exhibition recreates an eclectic 1960s–70s Caribbean front room, filled with authentic furnishings, photographs and cultural artefacts that bring Windrush history to life.
Visitors can sit on the settee, rest a cup on the centre table and use QR codes and augmented reality (AR) to access interactive digital content. Participants will also be invited to share their own Windrush stories and reflections as they explore the exhibition experience.

Tree Planting Ceremony

The Windrush commemorative tree planting ceremony, led by Enfield’s first Caribbean Mayor, will create a lasting public legacy that symbolises growth, promotes remembrance and honours the contributions of the Windrush generation.
Taking place as part of the Windrush Day celebration on 22 June 2026, the ceremony will bring together residents, Windrush elders and community leaders in a moment of reflection, unity and hope.
The tree will stand as a living legacy for future generations, representing the enduring roots of Windrush heritage within the community.
Windrush Children's Book

The children’s book provides an educational and cultural resource to extend awareness of the Windrush story through libraries and schools.

Featuring an interactive animated AR front cover that unlocks digital animation via a mobile device, this book transforms story time into an immersive experience for children. Through colourful, enchanted illustrations and themes of empathy, courage and wonder, young readers will experience the Windrush story, not just read it.
Inspired by Caribbean front rooms of the Windrush generation and the young author’s lived experience of her grandmother’s home, the book helps children connect with the deeper truths of the Windrush generation in a way that is engaging, relevant and accessible.
